FIELD EXPERIENCE:

 

1969-1970       speleology, as part of the Maryland Cave Survey, contributing to production of (Franz, R. and Slifer, D. 1971, Caves of Maryland, educational series No. 3, publication of Maryland Geological Survey).

 

1971                archaeology, University of Maryland (ossuary) - removal and preparation of skeletal material, field school site under direction of Dr. Douglas Climer.

 

1972                primatology, locomotor behavioral field study of the green monkey (C.a. sabaeus) conducted on St. Kitts (BWI), and at the Caribbean Primate Center Pargara Research Facility; (summer) supported by Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research.

 

1982                primatology, established field study site for positional study of C.a. sabaeus. Study was conducted on St.Kitts (BWI) in rain forest environment.

 

1990                primatology, established field site on Cayo Santiago Island (Puerto Rico).

 

1991                began work with Dr. Jean Tournquist (professor of Anatomy, University of Puerto Rico) on field and laboratory study of rhesus macaques locomotion and posture.

 

1992                field work on Cayo Santiago continues with testing of postural inventory for data collection as well as field botanical survey and segment parameter data collection from anatomical specimens.

 

1993                a three month behavioral investigation was conducted at the Caribbean Primate Research Center Island facility at Cayo Santiago.  Ontogenetic substrate associated positional data was collected.

 

1994                a one month ontogenetic positional field study was conducted at the Caribbean Primate Research Center at the Sebanna Seca Field Station and at Cayo Santiago. Ontogenetic substrate associated positional data was collected.

 

1995                a three week field study at Sebanna Seca and Cayo Santiago was conducted in February, 1995 in order to collect data on three dimensional postural biomechanics.  An AOA funded student, (Claire Sanger), participated in this field study.

 

1996                a two week field study at Cayo Santiago was conducted in March, 1996  to clarify categories of postural behavior in contact with the base of support.  An AOA supported student, (Claire Sanger) took part in this study.

 

1997                field work at Cayo Santiago Primate Research Center and at the Museum housing the primate skeletal collection at the University of Puerto Rico. With Dr. Essig-Beatty and student colleagues, Dona Leskewski, Erin Porfeli, and Jeremy Mills.

 

1999                sabbatical work with Dr. Jean Turnquist.

 

2000                preliminary field study in Costa Rico designed to select an appropriate site for a long term study of Howler monkey locomotion and posture.

 

2001                pilot study for Howler locomotion and posture ontogeny to be conducted in Costa Rico, July, 01. Funded by an Intramural Grant. With the aid of student colleague, John Boone.

 

2002                planned study to be conducted in Canas Costa Rico, continuing Howler monkey locomotor and postural study.  June, 2002. With the aid of student colleague, Molly Swank.

 

            2003                data collected in Canas Costa Rico, continuing Howler monkey locomotor and postural study. June, 2003. With the aid of student colleague, Nick Knowles.

 

            2004                a new study of Gibbon locomotion and posture from an ontogenetic basis, was conducted at Khoa Yai National Park in Northern Thailand with Dr. Warren Brockelman in May, 2004. This study initiates a view of morphological change in a lesser ape with a free mobile upper extremity. With the aid of student colleague, Molly Swank.

 

 

            2005                Data was collected at the study site in Canas, Costa Rica, with student colleagues, Matt Erck and Billie Jean Crigger (Supported by a grant from SOMA).

 

 

PLANNED FIELD WORK

                       

            2006                Gibbon data collection will be continued at the Khoa Yai National Park in Northern Thailand with Dr. Warren Brockelman. Student, Billie Jean Crigger will take part in the research as will research assistant, Nancy Jean Wells.

 

            2007                Work will be continued in Thailand on the Gibbon product with student assistant, Alexis Haifly.

 

 

HISTORIC SITES ARCHAEOLOGY PRESERVATION WORK:

 

1976                cataloged, moved and restored early 19th century log home (and stage depot) from Monroe County site where it was slated for demolition.

 

1978                cataloged, moved and restored early 19th century barn and livery stable from abandoned farmstead.  Barn required extensive restoration.

 

1987                began restoration and study of six story mill built in 1856 including dam, pond, tail race and site.  Restored by grants from the Department of Culture and History, State of West Virginia.  Presented findings to the State Department of Culture and History and to the Monroe County Historical Society.

 

1988                had Cook's Mill listed on National Registry of Historic Places and initiated preparation of museum displays on water powered industry.

 

1989                moved and began restoration of 1911 Bruce Macbeth (37 ton) 4 cylinder

            engine from the Clarksburg Water Works.

 

1990                moved early Erie steam powered hammer from Sharon steel and began

restoration.

 

1990                initiated movement and restoration of 1912 Corliss Alis Chalmers 150 hp steam engine from Carolina Paneling Company in North Carolina.

 

1990                began historical survey and preparation for salvage, relocation and restoration of early 19th century 2 story log home.

 

1990                began historical survey and stabilization of the Bean Mill in Hardy County.  The Bean Mill is an early 19th century 3 story grist mill with complete massive wooden works. The unstable structure will be dismantled and restored at a new location in spring of 1991. Grant application in process.

 

1991/92           all of the machinery and permanent internal workings of the Bean Mill were removed and are currently in the restoration process in Monroe County.  The two story log home relocated in 1990 has been roofed and permanent stone work is in process.

 

1993                a two story, two bay 19th century log barn was surveyed, catalogued and removed for relocation and is in the process of reconstruction and restoration.

 

1994                Restoration began on a 1900 Lefel turbine which was transported from the Arnott Mill Archaeological site. This turbine will be functional by 1995.

 

1995                Work continues on restoration of two story log home kitchen and walk-in cooking fireplace researched and under construction.

 

1997                Under a grant from "Kids Working" - the Cooks Mill water powered wood working shop was restored.

 

1999                Taught two interns from the Institute for Earth Education preservation skills in the Laurel Creek Forge at the Old Mill Historic Site.
